Olivia
Author: Ian Falconer
Publication Date: 8/1/2000
Genres: Fiction, Children’s literature
Intended audience age range: 3-5 years
Awards won: Caldecott Honor
This book goes throughout the pig Olivia’s day. She is a female character who plays, dances, sings, and puts on make- up. This book is in black and white, with pops of bright red. This makes it very feminine, and show’s little girls how the typical girl goes about their day. This book portrays girls as very feminine.
I would suggest this book to a preschool girl who enjoys playing dress up. This is a great book to help prove how fairytales portray women. This is a very simple book compared to the rest, most likely due to the age level of the audience. It does not have as many detailed illustrations or colors like Madeline. I think that it would be fun for a young girl to read.

Madeline
Author: Ludwig Bemelmans
Publication Date: 1967
Genres: fiction, children’s literature
Intended audience age range: 4 years
Awards won: Caldecott Honor
In this book, the nun is very strict. The little girls have the same routine every night, break their bread, brush their teeth, and go to bed. I do not agree with the portrayal of women in this book. The nun treats them like robots.
Although this book is interesting, I would not recommend young children to read this book because it could be slightly scary. The book is very dark, but has wonderful illustrations. This book reminds me of Strega Nona because of the older lady. This book could be used to help children who are going to be having surgery or any other medical procedure.

Strega Nona
Author: Tomie dePaola
Publication Date: 1975
Genre: Fairy tale
Intended audience age range: 5-8 years
Awards won: Caldecott Honor
This is a fairytale about an old witch with magical powers. She could do things like cure a headache, make potions for girls who wanted husbands, and get rid of warts. This portrays to little girls that it is necessary for them to have a husband, and if they don’t, they need to fix it.
I do not agree with the magic tricks the old witch is doing. She is trying to make the little girls flawless, and that is not how God makes us. I would not recommend this book to children because it might make them self-conscious of various things. The illustrations are very light, and it reminds me a little bit of the book Skippyjon Jones.

Skippyjon Jones
Author: Judy Schachner
Publication Date: 2003
Genres: Adventure, rhyming book, comedy
Intended audience age range: 3- 5 years old
Awards won: E.B. White Read Aloud Award
This book is about a Siamese cat who loves going on adventures with his imagination. The mother has very gender typical tasks. Cleaning, yelling at the child, and cooking. Even though these tasks are very stereotypical, I do not believe that it portrays a poor view of women to children.
I would recommend this book to a preschooler who loves adventure. This book will inspire young readers to explore their imagination by using the things around them. The illustrations are pleasing for children to look at. I would compare this book to Do Princess Wear Hiking Boots because both of the little girls enjoy doing things that are outside the cultural norm.

The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses
Author: Paul Goble
Publication Date: 1978
Genre: Fairytale
Intended audience age range: 5-8 years
Awards won: Caldecott Metal
This novel is about a little Native American girl who really loves wild horses. Considering this is a fairytale, it is not like any others. This little girl goes out all alone all year long to live among the wild horses. This would not be a good book for my research project since it does not portray women in a negative way.
I would recommend this novel to any young boy or girl who enjoys reading fantasies or loves horses. The illustrations in this book are beautiful and fun to look at for children because of the bright colors. Children might enjoy learning about horses as well throughout the book.

Part- Time Princess
Author: Deborah Underwood
Publication Date: 2013
Genre: Fairy tale
Intended audience age range: 4- 7 years
This novel goes against the stereotypical princess book, and would not be a good option for my research topic. The little girl in this book pretends that she is a princess at night, but not a normal fairy-tale princess. She does things like fight dragons and trolls.
I would highly recommend this book to any kindergarten girls. It is a very fun, exciting, and colorful book. It is similar to the book, Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots because it defies the typical princess or fairytale book. These princesses do other things besides wear pink sparkle dresses and look for their prince, which is great for young readers.

Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots?
Author: Carmela Coyle
Publication Date: 2003
Genre: Fiction picture book
Intended audience age range: 3- 7 years
This novel does not align with my research topic. It is a great children’s book, and portrays women in a positive way. The little girl in this picture book asks her mother questions like, “Do princess do chores? Do princesses climb trees? Do Princess ride tricycles?” This novel lets young girls explore different ways they can consider themselves a princess.
I would recommend this book to any young girls in kindergarten or first grade. It is a great way to make them feel confident even if they are a part of a lower or middle class family. The themes in this book are very similar to the picture book, Part Time Princess.

This novel is a retelling of the original Cinderella. This is a small picture book that young girls would be able to read. They portray women in this novel as naughty, pretty, and needing a man. This book would be great to apply to my research project.

The Snowy Day
Author: Ezra Keats
Publication Date: 1962
Genre: Classics
Intended audience age range: 3-7 years
Awards won: Caldecott winner
This novel is about a young boy who goes on adventures after the first snow of the season. This would not be a good book for my research project because the mother in this novel is portrayed as very exciting and fun. She let the little boy play in the snow all day without getting in trouble.
This is a great novel to recommend to children in Kindergarten. It lets them be imaginative. This book reminds me of Skippyjon Jones because of how imaginative the characters are. Children will really enjoy the colorful pictures.

The Paper Bag Princess
Author: Robert Munsch

Picture book
Genre: Fantasy
Intended audience age range: 3- 8 years
This novel is about princess Elizabeth who is being forced to marry Prince Ronald. A dragon gets into the castle and kidnaps Ronald. The princess eventually outsmarts the dragon and gets Ronald back. This book portrays women as very strong and powerful. Most fairytales tend to stay away from this.
I really enjoyed this novel. It is great for boys or girls from age 3-8. I would highly recommend this book to any young child who is interested in fantasies. The illustrations are very detailed and fun to look at. Some young children may be afraid of the large dragon.

Island of the Blue Dolphins
Author: Scott O’Dell
Publication Date: 1960
Chapter
Genres: Historical fiction, adventure
Intended audience age range: 9-12 years
Awards won: John Newbery Medal
This historical fiction novel is about a young girl, who is stranded on an island of blue dolphins for many years. Because she is all alone, she is required to do roles of a male such as fishing, hunting, and building canoes in order to survive. This novels portrayal of women goes against the norm. They portray her as courageous and self- sufficient.
This is a great novel. I would be careful who I recommend this to because of the death of her brother. It could be heart breaking to younger children. This may be a good read for in- class, so the students are not reading it by themselves.

Charlotte's Web
Author: E.B. White
Publication Date: 1952
Genre: Classics
Intended audience age range: 9- 12 years
Awards won: Newbery Honor
This classic novel is about a pig’s friendship with the spider who lives in a barn. The pig is threatened to being slaughtered, but Charlotte convinces the farmer to let him live if Fern cares for it. Fern accepts this role and begins to nurture the big by feeding him regularly with a bottle. This is a very stereotypical gender role for a female character.
I would highly recommend this book to a boy or girl, especially if they love animals. There is a death incident in this novel, but I think it is appropriate for children to read.

Because of Winn- Dixie
Author: Kate DiCamillo
Publication Date: March 2000
Genre: Realistic fiction
Intended audience age range: 8-12 years
Awards won: Newbery metal
This Realistic fiction novel is about India Opal who adopts a dog from a grocery store. This little girl is going through a tough time after she was forced to move in with her dad in a trailer. Her mother was an alcoholic and left at a very young age. India now has many questions about her mother, and her new dog helps her cope with them. I did not notice this novel having any specific portrayals of women like I thought it would.
This would be a great book to recommend to a child who is going through the same issues has India. This could help him or her cope with their problem. This book is similar to Charlotte’s Web because of the animal characters.

This is a historical fiction novel about Sarah who travels from Maine to the prairie in response to an advertisement for a wife and mother. This novel has very stereotypical gender portrayals since the man cannot live happily without a wife. While the children are waiting for their new mother, they ask questions like, “Is she going to sing? Will she be nice?”
I would recommend this book to children who like Laura Ingalls books, especially Little House on the Prairie. Female children may enjoy this more than male children because of the domestic feel. This would be a great addition to a a history unit in classroom.

A Little Princess
Author: Tania Zamorsky
Publication Date: 3/1/2005
Genre: Fairy tale
Intended audience age range: 7-9 years
A little girl names Sara Crewe begins her life as a princess born into a wealthy family. But, after the tragedy of her father’s death, she is obligated to become a slave for girls who used to be her friends. Throughout this tough experience, Sara holds on tight to her positivity, which is unlike other fairy tales. In many fairy tales, a prince comes and saves her.
This book seems like a great book for young girls. I would be careful who I recommend this book to because of the tragedy. I think it would be a great book for girls who are dealing with a death in the family because the main character tries to stay positive the entire time. This book also has the option of a CD, which would be great for children to follow along with.

Publication Date: 1953
Genre: Historical Fiction
Intended audience age range: 8- 12 years old
This novel is about a family from Wisconsin who travels to different states in the
East, and finally settle in South Dakota. The women in this novel have very normal gender roles, they are portrayed as people who cook, clean, and take care of the children.
I would recommend this book to a young girl or boy who likes historical fiction. I think it’s a great book to teach children about the history of America. This book reminds me of Anne of Green Gables because of the family life and gender roles portrayal.

Anne of Green Gables
Author: L.M. Montgomery
Publication Date: 1994
Genre: Coming- of- age novel
Intended audience age range: 9- 12
The 11- year old orphan girl in this novel is mistakenly sent to a family who wanted to adopt a boy. She strives to cope with this issue throughout the novel. This chapter book is a great example of my research project. The family wanted a male so he could take care of the farm, and when they received the little girl, they were disappointed. This is portraying that young girls are not capable of doing a man’s job outside.
I would recommend this book to a male or female around 5th grade. This would be a great book to recommend to foster or adopted children. I did not see any similarities between this novel and any others. This author has a series of these book, this would be a great way to keep children reading if they enjoy this author.

This novel is about young girls signing a pledge to commit to following their parent’s footsteps. I thought that this would be a good book for my project, but now I do not think it is. I do not see females portrayed in a particular way that would affect children.
I would recommend this novel to any female who wants to read this on top of something else. This book is not very educational, and does not teach children any specific moral values. This book is similar to A Little Princess. iTunes carries this novel as an ebook. Children could listed to this novel on their apple devices.

The Secret Garden
Author: Frances Burnett
Publication Date: 1911
Genres: Romance, coming of age
Intended audience age range: 7- 11 years
The Secret Garden is about a young 10-year-old girl named Mary who is born in India to very selfish and wealthy parents. She was a very unloved child, and taken care of by their servants. Mary is very rude and self- centered. This book’s portrayal of women is very different. Mary has a bad attitude because of the circumstances she had to grow up in. I could possibly use this for my research project.
I would recommend this book to and child who is interested. It would be a great read for a child in an unhealthy home because it might help them feel not alone. This book is similar to Little House on the Prairie because they are both sent off to live with someone else, not in the best circumstances.
