I attended the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association Conference the morning of Friday, October 31st. I decided to go to a session called, American Literature after 1865. I chose this session because I thought I could relate some of the material to our children’s literature class. This conference was a lot different than I expected. I did not realize people were going to be reading their own personal papers. There were three people on the panel discussing topics such as counterfeit money in American literature, and the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. They were discussing many things that I have never even thought about. I really enjoyed attending this conference.
At the end of the reading of the essays, we had about 20 minutes for a time of questions and answers. The audience was allowed to ask the panel of readers any question pertaining to their essay. One of the audience members asked the lady with the The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn paper, “how do you see racialization? Is it the same or different in relating to a specific class?” I thought this was a very interesting question. The lady on the panel answered this by explaining that she believed they are very related. She compared poor and educated white vs. black people. I’m glad I chose to go to this conference because I gained a new insight of American literature.
